MODULE A – Shifting the Paradigm

In Module A, learners are introduced to people with involved disabilities and the barriers they face in accessing primary care in traditional settings. These individuals have complex medical needs, and a low threshold to predictable medical complications that lead to frequent hospitalizations and high costs. Frequent hospitalizations interfere with their goal of living independently in the community. A different set of values—derived from the Independent Living Movement—is presented as the foundation for building a primary care delivery system that is accessible and responsive. These values include respect for: a) the expertise derived from people living with disabilities’ lived experience b) the dignity of risk and c) self-determination.
